Let?s address the elephant in the room, shall we?
One of the biggest reasons why you have not yet started your food freedom journey is because you fear weight gain?
How do I know this?
Because I too have been there and so have many of my clients.
It is so easy to keep pushing it under the rug ... to be in denial that you maybe don?t have the best relationship with food.
Signs that you don?t have a healthy relationship with food include:
It is easy for us to stay in this mindset of believing that forever restricting our food intake is the answer to staying healthy.
Why? Because we live in a world where dieting is so accepted by society. It is ?normal? for us to always be on a diet or wanting to change something about our body.
However, let me ask you a question?
Do you ever feel exhausted and burnt out from always being so switched on about your food choices? Do you ever get sick and tired of always saying "no" to food when you really want to say "yes"? Of always tracking your calories, eating smaller portions, fearing eating out, avoiding social events? Are you just over it?
I know for me, I got to a point where I was over it ? where I was fearful that I would forever have to live my life thinking about food 24/7 and feeling out of control.
The good news is that I was wrong. This doesn?t have to be a forever thing ? you can learn to accept yourself and have food freedom.
One misconception I hear so often is that when you have food freedom and allow yourself to eat 'unhealthy foods', you no longer honour your health?
(Whatttt!!!!)
Is forever dieting, limiting food/energy that your body needs honouring your health?
I would say "no ... no it is not."
Now don?t get me wrong, I am not saying that weight loss is bad by any means. Not at all. There is certainly a place for weight loss. However, it needs to come from a place of self-love rather than self-hatred. This is difficult because a lot of diets out there will feed into your insecurities and get you to buy into them because they convince you that you hate your body and that if you want any success and happiness in life you need to start the diet.
This is so f**ked up!
Short answer is? no, not at the same time...
I know that is probably not what you wanted to hear.
However, after working with hundreds of people, I've found that you need to work on increasing your control over food (aka food freedom) before you even think about losing weight. This ensures that your weight loss journey is coming from a place of self-love ... that your journey will not be stupidly restrictive ... that you will continue eating all food groups ... that you won?t avoid social situations ... that you won't restrict and binge.
Doing all of this first will make your weight loss journey infinitely easier because you'll be able to achieve consistent results and maintain them much easier than you ordinarily would be able to. When it comes to dieting, just remember: if you don't think you can do it for the rest of your life, don't do it for a day.
I know that not being able to do both at the same time is not the answer you wanted to hear. I had to learn this the hard way (as did many of my clients). However, think of it like this?
Would you rather:
You can choose whatever path you want, but I know that I personally would choose the second path...
Yes, it might be a bigger time commitment than a ?6-week shred challenge?. However, in the long run, it'll save you ridiculous amounts of time and stress. You'll be able to get your life back and experience sustainable results.
